The following is a list of the Governors and Governors General of Canada. Though the present day office of the Governor General in Canada came into being only upon Canadian Confederation in 1867, it is generally accepted that the institution is a continuation from the first governorship of New France in 1608.1
The following is a list of Administrators of the Government, who were acting governors appointed as the result of the death or prolonged absence of the sitting viceroy, or for any other reason:
^ ab Lord Gosford resigned in November 1837, during the Lower Canada Rebellion. Colborne was raised to commander in chief of British forces and acting governor general to put down the 1837 Rebellions and restore order in both Upper Canada and Lower Canada. He remained in place until Lord Durham's arrival.
