Åsta Gudbrandsdatter
Åsta Gudbrandsdatter

Åsta Gudbrandsdatter (c. 975/980 – c. 1020/1030) was the mother, from her marriage to Harald Grenske (Grenski), of Norwegian king Olaf II, renowned as St. Olaf (995-1030, reigned 1015 to 1028).

From her second marriage to Sigurd Syr, she became the mother of another Norwegian king, Harald III, famous in the Heimskringla as Harald Hardrada (1015-1066, reigned 1047 to 1066). Åsta's father was Gudbrand Kula from Oplandene, according to the sagas. Åsta may have been baptised at Ringerike by Olav Tryggvason, circa 998.

Åsta and Sigurd Syr had the following children, according to the sagas:

  1. Guttorm, their eldest
  2. Gunnhild
  3. Halfdan
  4. Ingerid
  5. Harald Hardrada, future King of Norway)
