Monday Apr 07, 2008 Is there really a diet that might help you control painful migraine headaches? While the research isn't conclusive, some studies suggest that certain foods or drinks can trigger a headache or make a migraine worse.
Some of the ingredients in processed and packaged foods are known to be headache triggers. These include nitrates, tyramine, caffeine, histamines, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). These ingredients can dilate the blood vessels in the brain, which can then bring on migraines.
Try eliminating all of the following foods and drinks from your diet; then, gradually add them back one at a time and see what happens to your migraines. Keep a log of your headaches and of the foods you consume, and when.
- Drinks: coffee, teas, sodas that contain caffeine, and all alcoholic beverages
- Meats: aged, processed, and canned meats such as hot dogs, salami, bologna, and dried meats (jerky)
- Fruits: avocados, figs, bananas, raisins, red plums, and citrus fruits
- Vegetables: all lentils and dried beans, onions, olives, pickles, sauerkraut, and soy products
- Dairy: aged cheeses such as brie, blue, and parmesan
- Snacks: chocolate, seeds, and nuts
Hunger and dehydration can both cause migraines as well, so besides looking at the specific foods you eat, stay hydrated and try to eat regular meals each day.
